Adeolu Adewumi-Zer about #EUROPE
We are very excited to welcome Adeolu Adewumi-Zer, Regional Head of Mergers, Acquisitions and Transformation at Allianz Group, in Passau, Germany for the international congress #rethinkeurope 2018. She has shared her views on Europe with us:
What do you associate with Europe?
I think of Europe as a land without borders, both literally and figuratively. I still remember the time I flew between Munich and Paris, and realized with horror that I had forgotten my (non-European) passport at home. However, it never became a problem—something I wish we could say in Africa.
What are your wishes for Europe?
I wish Europeans would realize the incredible vision they have achieved in the shape of the European Union. It is so easy to take what you have for granted—the fact that one can grow up in Passau, study in Barcelona, intern in Amsterdam and finally begin one‘s career in Milan. As a Nigerian based in Germany, I was considered normal; as a Nigerian based in Kenya, I am still seen as a bit unique.
What do you think are challenges that Europe might face in future?
I think Europe will risk being stuck in the past, too dependent on bygone glories, and forget that the world changes even more quickly every day. Here in Africa, we are forced to change, forced to adapt. This is what helps us to leapfrog Europe in many dimensions, as we race into the future, although perhaps too ready to forget our past.
What is your personal contribution or your company’s contribution to Europe´s future development?
As a European-headquartered company, with a majority of our business still in Europe, Allianz has contributed significantly to the safety and security of Europeans. Our size and stability allows Europeans the space to dream big dreams, because we realize the world belongs to those who dare. However, we also recognize that future growth will most likely come from outside Europe, and, only by leveraging the resources and innovations driving that growth, can we ensure Europe‘s continued development.
